A sympathetically designed kitchen for one of the oldest buildings in the Huon Valley.
Now a home, this building was once a community space. Several years ago I made some double glazed Tasmanian Oak timber windows to replace the original (damaged) front windows in this beautiful heritage building. It’s always humbling and a privilege to hear from returning clients when they are ready to do their next project.
Details:
The new kitchen copied the original layout of the old kitchen. Drawers were chosen for practicality instead of cupboards.
To preserve the integrity of the building the original wall panelling was left intact. Hence, no overhead kitchen cabinets added.
The only cabinet doors are under the sink, a broom cupboard and a small cupboard designed by the homeowner that fits between the base of the stairs and the bench top.
Soft closing drawers were chosen to save the homeowner from bending down searching through cupboards (like they had to in the old kitchen).
The kitchen is made from Tasmanian Oak. Includes bench top, cabinet doors and drawer fronts.
The lighting fixtures and power points weren’t changed and the homeowners reused their sink and tap ware.
A small kitchen island designed by the homeowner has double doors and is on caster wheels for convenience.
The homeowners chose to varnish the Tasmanian Oak and installed the drawer handles themselves.
What would you do?
Would you paint or varnish?
Most drawer handles can be used on these drawers. I can install them or you can choose to install the drawer handles yourself to keep the costs down.
All photos were taken on install day with the exception of the small kitchen island in the photo above. The homeowner had varnished and installed the handles.
With thanks and appreciation to the homeowners for allowing me to photograph and share their new kitchen.
Until next time,
Michael
